Wind Turbines

The criteria necessary to commission an efficient wind system requires a significant amount of vacant land upon which to erect a wind tower, and the terrain which is conducive to generating sufficient wind flow.  Rule of thumb is that you want to have no major obstacles to your south west direction and your wind turbine must be erected at least 30 feet higher than any object within 500 feet of that direction. Average wind speeds in Ontario are 4.5 Meters per second or 10 mph - a Class 1 wind.  There is no value in capturing wind below 6 mph as the energy that can be extracted is nominal.  Most wind turbines on the market today don't even have a rated output below 6mph.  If you live on the edge of a major body of water or on the top of a hill then you are most likely a good candidate for a Wind Turbine.

Turbine Towers

The single best investment on a Wind Turbine system is an increase in tower height.  The higher you go the more wind you get.  Pending approval of local bi-laws, there is no other restriction under 195 feet.

Tilt up towers are usually 1/3 to 1/2 of the cost of free standing towers but require more land for securing the guy wires.  Tilt up towers have four anchor points and require the same amount of footage from corner to corner as tower height.  If your tower is 75 feet high then from center (tower base) you must allow for 37.5 feet to each guy anchor.

Tilt up towers are extremely easy to raise an lower.  This makes tower or turbine maintenance easy and less dangerous.  There is also no Crane erection fee required.
